Split Decisions: Family Finance when a Policy Discontinuity Allocates Overseas Work

چکیده
Split Decisions: Family Finance when a Policy Discontinuity Allocates Overseas Work Labor markets are increasingly global. Overseas work can enrich households but also split them geographically, with ambiguous net effects on decisions about work, investment, and education. These net effects, and their mechanisms, are poorly understood. We study a policy discontinuity in the Philippines that resulted in quasi-random assignment of temporary, partial-household migration to high-wage jobs in Korea. This allows unusually reliable measurement of the reduced-form effect of these overseas jobs on migrant households. A purpose-built survey allows nonexperimental tests of different theoretical mechanisms for the reduced-form effect. We also explore how reliably the reduced-form effect could be measured with standard observational estimators. We find large effects on spending, borrowing, and human capital investment, but no effects on saving or entrepreneurship. Remittances appear to overwhelm household splitting as a causal mechanism. Labor unions and payout policy: A regression discontinuity analysis
We study the causal effect of labor unions on corporate payout policy by using a regression discontinuity (RD) design. Passing a union election leads to an 8.7% lower dividend ratio and a 17.9% lower total payout ratio (including both dividends and share repurchases) than failing an election in the following year. The negative effect of unions on payout is absent in firms located in states with...

The 4% rule is the advice most often given to retirees for managing spending and investing. This rule and its variants finance a constant, non-volatile spending plan using a risky, volatile investment strategy. As a result, retirees accumulate unspent surpluses when markets outperform and face spending shortfalls when markets underperform. The previous work on this subject has focused on the pr...

Until the 1960s, when the advent of the Eurodollar market transformed the banking industry, British-owned banks were the predominant form of multinational bank. From the 1830s, British banks had established overseas branches, first in British colonial settlements in Australia and Canada, later in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and even California. By 1914 a group of around 30 banks owned and oper...
